Ignác Triebeľ was born in Partizánske on 6 March 1933 and dedicated a considerable part of his life to pugilism, as boxing was called at the time. Boxing for Iskra Partizánske, for many years he buttressed the first division team and during the late 1950s was among Czechoslovakia’s best light heavyweight boxers. Four times he donned the national jersey.

In August 1955 he was invited to compete with the national team at a meet in the former East Germany. The Iskra pugilists would go on to win two international meets.

He successfully completed training in Bratislava and qualified to become a second-class referee in 1963. For his contribution to Slovak boxing, the first-division tournament bears his revered name. The tournament is open to boxers from Slovakia in all weight and age categories.
